A series of short, incisive, and affordable eBooks on a wide range of topics in art, music, film and literature, by Donald Brackett, author of books on Marianne Faithfull, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Tina Turner, and Aretha Franklin, and most recently, Yoko Ono. Once individually released as downloads, the books will be gathered into a single printed volume.
The Eyewitness series focuses on contemporary art and artists; the Earwitness series offers an in-depth look at well-known musical artists; the Mindreader series reviews important literary releases; and the Dreamteller series explores films and the craft of cinema.
In the first title to be released (in August), More than Meets the Eyes: Art Through the Ages, we see how visual art evolves over time and appears to change, but maintains one consistent feature: it is an embodied meaning created out of our deep-seated need for images.
Others in the series discuss pop greats such as Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner, and Fleetwood Mac, experimentalists like Brian Eno, John Cage, and George Crumb, great American composers like Ives and Copeland and Ellington, the cinema of Kirk Tougas, artists Patricia Salen, David Lasry, Agnes Martin, and Bruno Kurz, the anti-Andy Warhol, Joachim Waibel, and philosophers/cultural critics Walter Benjamin and Marshall McLuhan in In Case of Future, Break Glass.
